LIV GOLF MAYAKOBA: TEAM TRANSFERS UIHLEIN, GOOCH SHARE RD. 2 LEAD; CRUSHERS UP BY 2

 

 

 

 

 Talor Gooch played for the champion 4Aces GC last season but left to join the RangeGoats. Peter Uihlein, who finished 2022 playing for Smash GC, was brought in to fill Gooch’s roster spot for the 2023 LIV Golf League. Now the two high-profile transfers share a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the season opener at Mayakoba.

 

Both players have made great impressions for their new teams through the first 36 holes. Now paired in the final group on Sunday, they’ll battle for an individual trophy. Will the outcome answer the question of whether the RangeGoats or the 4Aces got the better end of the transfers?

 

“No, not week 1 out of 14 events,” Uihlein laughed.

 

“I think we need a little bit of a bigger sample size,” Gooch added.

 

Still, said Uihlein, “it’s funny how sometimes those play out, don’t they?”

 

Meanwhile, Uihlein’s 4Aces and Gooch’s RangeGoats will both play chaser in the team competition. Crushers GC (14 under) will take a two-stroke over the 4Aces (12 under), with Fireballs GC (10 under) and the RangeGoats (7 under) also lurking.

 

It’s the first time the Crushers have taken a lead into any LIV Golf round – and they’ve done so through the first two rounds without captain Bryson DeChambeau contributing a counting score.

 

“It shows the crazy nature of golf, number one,” said Charles Howell III, the leading Crushers player who is in solo third, one shot behind the co-leaders. “Number two, I know Bryson has a low one in him. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him shoot a low one tomorrow.”

 

As for Uihlein and Gooch, both are former Oklahoma State players (as is Howell) and both are good friends. They’ve chatted about the transfers, how it happened that both were involved. Gooch wanted to play with his good friend Harold Varner III. Uihlein felt like he was joining the Yankees when he got the nod from 4Aces Captain Dustin Johnson, whose team won four regular-season events and the Team Championship last year.

 

“I’ve told Talor a lot that I think he’s handled this as well as anybody could have since joining (LIV Golf) and being on the Aces and then obviously switching teams,” Uihlein said. “Just the way the team stuff works out, with the finances and stuff, he’s done it incredibly well. I have a lot of respect for him.”

 

Said Gooch: “Once I knew what was going to happen and I was going to Bubba’s team, Peter was one of the first guys I called. Like, hey, we might be needing a fourth, don’t go signing anywhere, don’t do anything.”

 

A year ago, Uihlein finished third in the Individual Champion race, with Johnson capturing the title. Gooch finished 11th. Neither lofted an individual trophy. It might change for one of them on Sunday.

 

“Pete played great last year,” Gooch said. “He beat me last year. … The Aces didn’t falter whenever they got Pete. They’re a great team and they’re going to continue to play well. Hopefully we can start playing like the Aces.

 

“Come the end of the season, I think they’re going to be some good battles.”

 

The first one ends Sunday at Mayakoba. Shotgun start at 1:05 p.m. ET

 

HOWELL TRAILS BY ONE BUT HAS THE LEAD IN MAYAKOBA EXPERIENCE

 

Charles Howell III is making his 14th professional start at El Camaleon Mayakoba, having played annually here from 2009-21. So while this is a new venue for the LIV Golf League, it’s familiar territory for the 43-year-old member of Crushers GC.

 

He’s never won at Mayakoba but he has a chance on Sunday. At 8 under through two rounds, he’ll start just one stroke off the lead and in the final group with co-leaders Peter Uihlein and Talor Gooch. All three played collegiately at Oklahoma State – and they were in the same group for Friday’s opening round.

 

“I really enjoyed playing with them,” Howell said. “They’re obviously two really great players that have played unbelievable golf on LIV. It’s a comfortable pairing.”

 

Of course, neither of the leaders can match Howell’s experience at Mayakoba. Uihlein had never seen the course until this week. Gooch had made three previous starts. In fact, no one else in the 48-man field has competed at Mayakoba as many times as Howell.

 

So is all that experience helping this week?

 

“Sometimes that experience can hurt you because you’ve seen yourself do everything on every hole,” Howell said. “But I think it has (helped). It’s nice to have a return venue, so when you’re practicing and playing, you have an idea of what’s going on. You’re not trying to learn something new.

 

“I think any of the guys that have played here before maybe have a slight bit of an advantage. But now that all the guys have seen it, it’s more about who can actually drive the ball the best, get the thing in the fairway, get it in play.”

 

El Camaleon is a course that offers low scores but also high danger, especially with jungle lining both sides of many holes.

 

“There’s 18 bridgeable holes and there’s 18 hard holes,” Howell said. “You never get comfortable out here. I think that’s a big deal in that when you’re playing a final round in the wind – which it will be on this golf course – it’s about surviving.”

LIV GOLF MAYAKOBA: CASEY, KOKRAK SHARE RD. 1 LEAD; CRUSHERS TAKE TEAM LEAD

                                

Paul Casey had to shrug off a double bogey. Jason Kokrak had to deal with a backup driver. Both veterans overcame those obstacles Friday, shooting 6-under 65s to share the first-round lead of LIV Golf Mayakoba, the season-opening event of the new LIV Golf League.

 
Casey’s Crushers GC lead the team competition at El Camaleon Golf Course by three strokes with a collective 10 under. Kokrak’s Smash GC and defending team champions 4Aces GC share second at 7 under.
 
Casey, who teed off on the 6th hole, rolled in a 60-foot birdie putt at the 16th hole and was cruising with a bogey-free 5 under through his first 14 holes. He then suffered his only bad swing of the day, a poor tee shot at the par-4 second that found the penalty area, leading to a double bogey.
 
“I’ve never played here before,” said the 45-year-old Casey. “I’m used to desert golf, when you’ve got that feeling of two hazards either side of the fairway. This place just puts you on edge … There are so many difficult tee shots that kind of get your attention. They kind of make you a bit nervous, to be honest, in this wind.”
 
But after quickly dropping off the lead, the Englishman responded by finishing his round with three consecutive birdies to climb back to the top.
 
“Maybe I was in the zone for the last three,” Casey laughed. “It was a really good day. A blemish is a blemish, but it is what it is. I’d be surprised if anyone gets through this tournament this week without making some kind of error like that.”
 
Kokrak didn’t have any bogeys in his round, but that doesn’t mean it was a completely error-free day. An errant tee shot at the 14th hole forced him to scramble, but he saved par by chipping in from off the green. He also used his putter from off the green at the second hole to drain a long birdie putt.
 
The 37-year-old Kokrak started his calendar year with two top-20 finishes in the Middle East and was particularly pleased with his driver in that stretch. But on Sunday while working in a simulator before leaving for Mexico, the face of his driver popped out. That has forced him to use his backup driver this week at El Camaleon.
 
He said the backup isn’t exactly identical, and described his first practice day on the range this week as “horrific, hitting it left.”
 
He spent the next two days tweaking his backup driver. Other than the 14th hole, he was solid off the tee, hitting 10 of 14 fairways.
 
“I knew I was hitting it well because all the other golf clubs I was hitting were right on target and quality golf shots, so I knew it wasn’t the golf swing,” Kokrak said. “It was just something small with the driver. Hopefully we have that figured out and we’ll drive it good for the rest of the week.”
 
The closest pursuers to the co-leaders are Carlos Ortiz (Fireballs GC), Peter Uihlein (4Aces GC) and Talor Gooch (RangeGoats GC). Ortiz and teammate Abraham Ancer, who each represented Mexico in the Olympics, received huge support Friday from their fellow countrymen.
 
“I love when I play in front of my family and friends and just Mexicans overall or Latins,” Ortiz said. “… I just tried to find a way to make things happen.”
 
Saturday’s second round of LIV Golf Mayakoba is set for a 1:15 p.m. ET shotgun start. Casey, Kokrak and Uihlein will play in the lead group off the No. 1 tee.

Matthew Wolff (No. 6 last year), who joined Smash GC, shot a 1-under 70. He opened his round with two double bogeys in his first five holes before playing the remainder of his round in a bogey-free 5 under. He is tied for 12th.

Baviera Golf acomete diversas obras de reforma en sus instalaciones

 Baviera Golf, campo malagueño asociado a la AECG, ha acometido en el último trimestre del año pasado diversas obras de mejora que contribuyen a la sostenibilidad del campo y que han finalizado en el mes de febrero.  

De este modo, en el hoyo 5 y en el tee del hoyo 6 se han llevado a cabo labores que han consistido en cubrir una amplia zona con corteza, lo que supondrá, además de un significativo ahorro de agua, otros tantos beneficios en mantenimiento del campo. 

En el lago del hoyo 14 se ha procedido a realizar trabajos de limpieza para mitigar los problemas provocados por la proliferación de algas, evitando los malos olores y el mal estado de sus aguas. Además, la cascada ubicada en este hoy logra que el agua oxigene y desacelere de la aparición de algas.  

Por otro lado, se ha procedido a la plantación de más de 150 árboles alrededor del campo de golf, que se ha realizado en temporada invernal con diferentes especies tales como cipreses, casuarinas, pinos, brachychinton y chopos. Con esta acción se favorece a la purificación del aire, ya que los árboles producen oxígeno, además de favorecer la reducción de la temperatura del suelo y evitar su erosión. Aparte de la belleza que con esta plantación ganará el campo.  

Fuera del campo de golf, también se han hecho mejoras en los jardines de las instalaciones, procediendo al rellano de piedras y corteza, que contribuyen al ahorro de agua y ha favorecer la belleza visual del entorno.

PGA Tour, Lpga Tour y Grant Thornton se unen para crear un torneo mixto de golf

El golf añade una prueba a su calendario. Professional Golfers' Association Tour (PGA Tour), Ladies Professional Golfers' Association Tour (Lpga Tour) y Grant Thornton se han unido para crear Grant Thornton Invitational con un premio de cuatro millones de dólares, un evento de equipos mixtos profesionales que se disputará del 4 al 10 de diciembre de 2023 en el Tiburón Golf Club y The Ritz-Carlton Naples.

 

Con el nuevo torneo, se volverá a presenciar una competición mixta de golf, algo que no ocurría desde 1999. Entonces, John Daly y Laura Davies ganaron la última edición del JCPenney Classic.

 

La prueba contará con 32 jugadores procedentes de PGA Tour y Lpga Tour. Hasta 16 profesionales pertenecerán al circuito norteamericano de golf profesional masculino y las otras 16 profesionales provendrán del circuito norteamericano de golf profesional femenino.

  

 

El comisionado de PGA Tour, Jay Monahan, ha asegurado que “mientras buscamos capitalizar el creciente interés en el juego del golf, la adición de un evento mixto al calendario ha sido una prioridad”.

 

Por su parte, la comisionada de Lpga Tour, Mollie Marcoux, ha explicado que “al unir fuerzas con el PGA Tour para acoger un evento mixto en el que los mejores golfistas masculinos y femeninos del mundo compiten unos junto a otros, vamos a ofrecer una experiencia memorable y entretenida para todos los aficionados al golf”.

 

Nelly Korda, golfista profesional de LpgaTour, ha admitido que “El Grant Thornton Invitational se trata de ser inclusivo y mostrar a la gente que el golf puede ser accesible para todos, no importa la forma en que juegues”.

 

Fuera de los campos de golf, PGA Tour se encuentra en litigios judiciales, tras denunciar a Liv Golf, alegando que el circuito disidente interfirió en su contrato con ciertos jugadores. El juicio se celebrará el 24 de enero de 2024.

 

En junio de 2022, PGA Tour amenazó con sanciones a los golfistas que participasen en el circuito LIV Golf. Ante las 42 solicitudes recibidas por la competición para que ciertos jugadores tuviesen derecho a competir en LIV Golf, estas fueron denegadas.

LIV Golf and EasyPost today announced that the industry leader in global shipping logistics, ecommerce and software development is now the Official Shipping Solutions Partner of LIV Golf.
