Garcia returns to Sentosa looking to back up Hong Kong win

Spain’s Sergio Garcia arrives at LIV Golf Singapore presented by Aramco at Sentosa Golf Club this week as the man in form. After a superb victory last weekend in Hong Kong at LIV Golf Hong Kong, the former Masters champion was catapulted to the top of the LIV Golf individual season standings.

Garcia is no stranger to success at Sentosa having won the Singapore Open in 2018 and finished runner-up at the inaugural LIV Golf Singapore in 2023. The Fireballs GC captain recorded a three-shot victory at LIV Golf Hong Kong on Sunday,  steering his side to the team title for a memorable double and take top spot in the LIV Golf team season standings.

The 2017 Masters champion, who finished third in the season-long LIV Golf individual championship race in 2024, moved to the top of the points standings after the first three events in 2025 with the win. The victory makes him a live selection to be one of Luke Donald’s wildcard picks for September’s Ryder Cup.

Fireballs GC captain Garcia, who will be playing in his 100th Major at the Masters next month, said: “The only thing I can do is keep playing good golf, and I just want to help the European team like I've tried to do every single time I've been a member of that team, and hopefully he will think I'm good enough for it. It will be important for me to play well this week, and I am looking forward to it.’

The Spaniard won’t have it all his own way on the hallowed Serapong Course this week with defending champion Brooks Koepka and a resurgent HyFlyers GC Phil Mickelson among the pack hunting for their first individual LIV Golf victories of the season.

As the defending individual champion on The Serapong, Smash GC captain Brooks Koepka is excited to be back in Singapore and hopes to draw inspiration from his victory at Sentosa 10 months ago.

“Everything was really solid,’ he said looking back to his two-shot win over Ripper GC captain Cameron Smith last year. ‘I didn’t really think I made too many mistakes. It’s a great feeling when it kind of feels easy.”

“I am excited to be back in Singapore. Obviously, I’ve had good results. Honestly, it’s just a cool country. The golf course is great. I think it’s the best course we play. Sentosa is pretty cool. You look at that whole front side — it’s all about positioning and being in the right spot, making sure you either hit the fairway or you’re positioned correctly. That’s what I think a good golf course tests you on.”

Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson, who made his Singapore Open debut on The Serapong back in 2007, will hope his resurgence in Hong Kong last weekend will see him to success this week. He finished in third at Hong Kong behind Garcia and Stinger GC’s Dean Burmester.

“The fact is, I’m hitting a lot of good shots. I’m playing some good golf,” said Mickelson, who has won three of his six majors at Augusta National. “This is a building week as I continue to build into LIV and my goal of accomplishing a win in LIV as well as winning another major or getting ready for Augusta.”

The Serapong was named Singapore’s and Asia’s Best Golf Course at the World Golf Awards in 2024, and its snaking layout, stunning conditions and spectacular backdrops mark it out as one where all the world’s leading professionals want to add a win in their career.

Sentosa Golf Club unveiled as LIV Golf venue for 2023

Sentosa Golf Club has continued to reinforce its status as Asia’s finest after The Serapong was announced as a venue on the LIV Golf League for 2023 (28-30 April).

Today, LIV Golf announced Sentosa Golf Club as one of three new marquee destinations outside the United States for its 2023 14-tournament schedule, which will see The Serapong welcome 48 of the world’s best players next season, including former Singapore Open Champions Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia.

LIV Golf’s field also includes Major Champions such as Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson.

The announcement comes off the back of one of the Club’s most successful awards season, headlined by being named 'World’s Best Eco-Friendly Golf Facility’ for the third year in a row and ‘Asia’s Best Golf Course’ at the recent 2022 World Golf Awards. The Club also scooped two further awards, ‘Best Championship Course in Asia-Pacific’ and ‘Singapore’s Best Golf Course’ for The Serapong at the recent edition of the Asian Golf Awards in Vietnam.

Sentosa Golf Club continues to go from strength to strength as an established powerhouse of Asian golf, defined by its state-of-the-art agronomy programme and ‘Tournament Ready’ conditioning all year round across both of its two world-class championship courses, The Serapong and The Tanjong.

The outstanding conditioning of The Serapong and Sentosa Golf Club’s proven track record of staging world class tournaments, as well as what the island of Sentosa and city of Singapore has to offer, played a significant part in the LIV Golf event staging.

Since 2018, Sentosa has been widely recognized for its commitment to sustainability, having become the first golf club in the world to join the UN Sports for Climate Action Initiative.

Regarded as one of the world’s best golf courses, players will get to experience The Serapong’s iconic layout, with fast, challenging greens, trademark contours and signature holes, enhanced during the outstanding renovations programme undertaken in 2020.

Andrew Johnston, General Manager and Director of Agronomy at Sentosa Golf Club, was quick to highlight the significance of this announcement for the Club, saying: “To be officially announced as a LIV Golf venue is exciting for everyone associated with Sentosa Golf Club. We are proud to have the opportunity to welcome 48 of the world’s best players to battle it out across The Serapong, for what will be the biggest prize purse and event in the history of golf in Singapore. We cannot wait to host the event and showcase to millions of people why Sentosa Golf Club is renowned for being one of the world’s best golf clubs.”

Andrew M Lim, President of Sentosa Golf Club, added: “Sentosa Golf Club has an illustrious history and track record of hosting international golf tournaments. 2023 will be no different and we anticipate another eventful year for the Club. Against the backdrop of golf’s global resurgence, Sentosa Golf Club welcomes fans in Singapore and the world over to come and watch some of the best players and brightest stars in world golf compete on The Serapong.”
