LIV GOLF ANNOUNCES LEAGUE FORMAT AND COMPETITION ENHANCEMENTS

On the heels of announcing final team rosters and Wild Cards for 2024, LIV Golf today released league format enhancements ahead of this week’s season-opening event at LIV Golf Mayakoba.

To build upon the sport’s most unique competition, the LIV Golf League has instituted enhancements effective for the 2024 season spanning across field size, counting scores, individual points distribution, season-long individual standings and qualification for the Team Championship.

"The competition updates for 2024 reflect a natural evolution of the LIV Golf League format and illustrate our commitment to further enhancing an exciting product for the players and the fans,” said LIV Golf SVP of Competition Management David Benne. “League leadership will continue to work with our world-class players and teams to strengthen LIV Golf competition as we move the sport into the future. We’re looking forward to the League’s season opener this week and a thrilling year ahead.”

LEAGUE FORMAT ENHANCEMENTS

FIELD SIZE – 54 players, including 13 teams (4 players each) and 2 Wild Card players.

COUNTING SCORES – Each team’s top three scores count for rounds 1 and 2. All four scores will now count for each team in the final round of each event.

INDIVIDUAL POINTS DISTRIBUTION – Points for players finishing with the same score will be added up and distributed evenly. Tiebreakers will only be in effect to determine podium positions.

SEASON-LONG INDIVIDUAL STANDINGS – Season long individual standings will retain the Lock Zone for positions 1-24, with updated cut-offs for the Open Zone (25-48) and Drop Zone (49 and below) to reflect the increased field size. Players finishing in the top 24 at the end of the regular season secure their 2025 spot in the League. Players finishing 25-48 who are out of contract will need to be re-signed by their team or picked up by another team. Players finishing 49 and below are relegated out of the League and qualify for the 2024 LIV Golf Promotions tournament.

INDIVIDUAL POINTS & PRIZE MONEY – Individual points will again be awarded to the top-24 finishers in each event. Prize money payouts have been adjusted to account for the six players added to the field. Click here to view tournament points and purse distribution for 2024.

TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD – The top 12 teams following the 13th regular season event will be seeded. The team that finishes in 13th place will not compete but will still attend.

ADRIAN MERONK AND LUCAS HERBERT HEADLINE ADDITIONAL ROSTER UPDATES FOR 2024 LIV GOLF LEAGUE SEASON

LIV Golf today announced new player signings and promoted player team assignments ahead of the season-opening event, LIV Golf Mayakoba, hosted at El Camaleon Golf Course in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Following yesterday's unveiling of Legion XIII, three other teams – Cleeks GC, Iron Heads GC, and Ripper GC – have announced their 2024 rosters including the signings of Adrian Meronk (Cleeks GC) and Lucas Herbert (Ripper GC). Additionally, two Wild Card spots have been added to the 2024 field, where Wild Card players will compete each tournament independent of any team for individual prizes and the season-long Individual Championship race.

ROSTER UPDATES

After their performances at the inaugural LIV Golf Promotions event in Abu Dhabi last December, qualifiers Kalle Samooja (Cleeks GC) and Jinichiro Kozuma (Iron Heads GC) have been confirmed for their respective teams. Additionally, Laurie Canter will play as a Wild Card at the first two tournaments, while Hudson Swafford will be a full-season Wild Card. Announcements on future Wild Card spots will be announced ahead of the events.

CLEEKS GC – ADRIAN MERONK (POLAND), KALLE SAMOOJA (FINLAND)

MERONK – The 2023 DP World Tour Player of the Year, Meronk has established himself as one of the top European players in the world. Selected to compete in the Tokyo Olympics, he also became the first Polish player to earn membership on the DP World Tour and consequently made history with his victory at the 2022 Horizon Irish Open by becoming the first player from Poland to win on the DP World Tour.

“I’m really looking forward to the new challenge and next chapter of my career as I team up with Martin and the Cleeks,” said Meronk. “While I appreciate this decision didn’t come easy, joining LIV Golf is a very special moment for my career. The 2023 season made me feel that despite all of my successes, 287 days a year which I spent away from home is too many. The LIV schedule gives me more time with my loved ones and more space to work on every aspect of my game. While on LIV, I will remain passionately dedicated to supporting the next generation of golf in Poland."

SAMOOJA – The champion at 2023 LIV Golf Promotions, Samooja has tallied 12 professional victories over his career. He is just the sixth Finnish golfer all-time to win on the European Tour, winning the 2022 European Open and representing Finland at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

RIPPER GC – LUCAS HERBERT (AUSTRALIA)

HERBERT – The Aussie has four professional wins, three on the European Tour and one on the PGA Tour, including a 2021 Bermuda Championship win over current LIV Golf members Patrick Reed and Danny Lee. Has made 14 major championship starts, with his best finish coming as a tie for 13th at the 2022 PGA Championship.

“I’m very excited to team up with Cam on the all-Aussie Ripper GC squad this season. This is an incredible opportunity, and I can’t wait to begin this part of my career,” said Herbert. “I’m looking forward to teeing it up this week in Mayakoba and of course playing in front of our home country crowd in Adelaide in a few months.”

IRON HEADS GC – JINICHIRO KOZUMA (JAPAN)

KOZUMA – Having made three starts in the inaugural 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Series, two for Torque GC and one for Smash GC, Kozuma is primed to make his official full-season debut this year. Having notched four professional victories (all from Japan), Kozuma’s signing makes Iron Heads GC the first team to represent four different continents.

WILD CARDS – LAURIE CANTER (ENGLAND), HUDSON SWAFFORD (USA)

SWAFFORD – A member of LIV Golf during the 2022 Invitational Series, Swafford has notched three PGA Tour victories and in 2020 achieved a ranking of No.2 in the FedEx Cup rankings. Following his absence last year due to injury, the American aims to take advantage of another full-time opportunity with LIV Golf this season.

CANTER – A reserve player for the bulk of last season on Majesticks GC, Canter narrowly missed out on a full-time spot this season after his efforts at LIV Golf Promotions. The Brit produced a breakthrough season in 2020 after finishing 19th in the Race to Dubai following five Top 10 performances including two runner-up finishes at the Portugal Masters and Italian Open. Also, a member of the LIV Golf Invitational Series in 2022.

LIV Golf competition begins Friday in Mexico, the kickoff to the league’s 14 tournament schedule in new and returning markets across the world. LEGION XIII UNVEILED AS LIV GOLF’S FIRST EXPANSION TEAM WITH THE SIGNING OF TYRRELL HATTON AND TOP AMATEUR CALEB SURRATT

LIV Golf today announced its first expansion team, Legion XIII, the first new team to join the league since its inception in 2022. Captained by two-time major winner and reigning Masters champion, Jon Rahm, Legion XIII will begin competing at the league’s season-opening event, LIV Golf Mayakoba, teeing off this Friday at El Camaleon Golf Course in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

“We’ve come a long way in a short period of time and are extremely proud of the team and brand we are building,” said Rahm. “As we were developing the team’s brand it became clear that I wanted to fight alongside a group of guys who aligned perfectly with what the team stands for. Tyrrell is a fierce competitor, proven champion, and of course my Ryder Cup teammate. Caleb is one of the brightest next gen stars of the game. And Kieran is a steady, talented ball striker who earned his promotion to LIV and is elevating his game every day.”

“The introduction of Legion XIII is a testament to LIV Golf’s continued growth as our league builds for the long-term,” said LIV Golf Commissioner and CEO Greg Norman. “Jon Rahm is one of the top competitors in the world and his team will make an immediate impact on the league both on and off the golf course. I’m thrilled to welcome his new teammates, Ryder Cup star Tyrrell Hatton and young gun Caleb Surratt, along with LIV Golf Promotions standout Kieran Vincent, who will undoubtedly be great additions to the league. This is another exciting moment in the natural evolution of LIV Golf and the future for the sport.”

ROSTER BREAKDOWN

The Legion XIII roster was finalized following the recent signings of Tyrrell Hatton (England), Caleb Surratt (United States), and Kieran Vincent (Zimbabwe).

JON RAHM – The Spaniard has amassed 20 wins over his career, including the 2023 Masters, 2021 U.S. Open, and the DP World Tour Championship three times (2017, 2019, 2022). Rahm has played in three consecutive Ryder Cups, helping lead Team Europe to victory in 2018 and 2023. Last year, Rahm won four times while also finishing tied for second in the 151st Open Championship and tied for fifth in the DP World Tour Championship.

TYRRELL HATTON – Hatton has been a fixture on the last three European Ryder Cup teams, playing a crucial role in reclaiming the cup (alongside Rahm) in the 2023 match, where he captured 3.5 out of 4 points. A six-time champion on the DP World Tour, Hatton has won four Rolex Series titles, including a victory at Europe’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. The Brit has been ranked in the top 10 in the world and claimed his maiden PGA Tour title in 2020 at The Arnold Palmer Invitational.

"I’m really excited for this next chapter, to link up with Jon Rahm and Legion XIII, and to get started this week in Mexico,” said Hatton.

CALEB SURRATT – One of the top amateur golfers in the world turns pro to join Legion XIII. Surratt won three of a possible four points in his 2023 Walker Cup debut, one of many outstanding performances for the decorated amateur. The North Carolina native enjoyed an illustrious college career, becoming the first University of Tennessee player to receive first-team All-America honors while also winning the 2023 SEC Championship individual title – the first freshman to do so since Justin Thomas in 2012.

“The opportunity to turn pro and be a part of Jon Rahm’s team is truly a special opportunity that is a great fit for me. I’m excited about the chance to compete and begin my professional career here in Mayakoba,” said Surratt.

KIERAN VINCENT – Vincent excelled at LIV Golf Promotions, the league’s inaugural three-day showdown in December 2023, to secure one of the three qualifying spots up for grabs through the tournament. The Zimbabwean turned pro in 2022 and played collegiately at Liberty University. He joins his brother, Scott (Iron Heads GC), as the only brother duo in the league.

BEHIND THE BRAND: LEGION XIII

Pulling from the attitude attributes of ‘proud’, ‘determined’, and ‘true’, Rahm infused his team’s DNA with honesty, emotion, and a sense of togetherness. United under the mantra ‘Together we play. Together we conquer.’, Legion XIII is bred by passion, energized by power, and full of pride.

“I wanted to go down the warrior spirit mythology side for the team's name,” said Rahm. “The term loyalty is very important for me – I think it embodies the warrior spirit through its decisiveness and ready-for-battle mindset. During the Roman Empire, there was the iconic Legion XIII Gemina in Caesar’s army. They believed in the credo of faithful loyalty.”

“Our first expansion team had to offer something new for fans to get involved with,” said LIV Golf Creative Director Will Newell. “This Legion, this collective, is all about bringing people together as a force to be reckoned with. Jon’s no-nonsense attitude fuels Legion XIII – all-heart, no half-measures and never afraid to be exactly who you are.”

“The XIII portion of the name was appealing early in the process as it fit the structure of captain (X) and the three players in the lineup (III),” said Rahm. “Plus, we are the 13th team in the league. As for the logo, that was something I was also very passionate about. The soccer team I grew up following (Athletic Bilbao) is called the Lions. It’s just a fierce animal that everybody respects and fears at the same time.”
